Almost heaven!

Hiking in the New River Gorge National Park

Bridges, waterfalls, and historic towns (and rain!) in the New River Gorge National Park.

White Water Rafting on the New River

The highlight of my trip! White water rafting on the New River Gorge. We covered about (according to my best guess) 13 miles of the river, putting in around the area of Oak Hill and taking out right under the famous New River Gorge Bridge. Along the way we went over several rapids up to class V, swam in the river, and even jumped out of the boat to float over a class II rapid with just our bodies! At one point a bald eagle flew directly across our bow. On theme for West Virginia, it also rained on us, but it cleared up and turned back into a beautiful sunny day in time for us to arrive under the famous arch bridge. We went with Ace Adventure Resort, and I can’t recommend them enough!

Blackwater Falls State Park

We stopped for a day hike in Blackwater Falls State Park. We were never able to find out why, but those falls sure were black! And if you can believe it, we got rained on… again. It’s hard to tell in that last photo of us in front of the falls, but it’s raining so hard that I am soaked through to my skin.

Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area

We originally went to Seneca Rocks with the intention of hiking to the tallest point in West Virginia, but when we got there we decided to take it easy and go for a swim instead. We found this great swimming hole right under the beautiful rock formation and got to hang out with some interesting locals all day.

Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park

Our last stop in West Virginia was the Harper’s Ferry National Park. I knew about John Brown but I loved learning more about his story and the details of his plan and raid.
